Lake County Sheriff not seeking a third term

Gary Borders withdraws candidacy

LAKE COUNTY, Fla. – Lake County Sheriff Gary Borders announced Friday in an email to staff that he will withdraw his candidacy for a third term as sheriff.

Borders, who filed on Feb. 1 to seek re-election, will retire after his second term.

Borders was appointed as sheriff in November 2006. He won his first election for the office in 2008 and was re-elected in 2012.

“He is truly honored to have served such supportive citizens in what he has repeatedly called the 'greatest county in the state,'” a news release said.

“He is also honored to have served alongside the employees of this agency, whom he calls the finest men and women in law enforcement.”

His term ends in January 2017.
