Man charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault

MELBOURNE, Fla. – A Melbourne man is charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault after stabbing his girlfriend with a screwdriver during a verbal altercation at their home, police said.

The Melbourne Police Department said they responded to the home of; Jean Lauriston, 31, at 804 Wisteria Drive in Melbourne at 6:11 a.m. Sunday.

The officers learned that Lauriston and his girlfriend of nine years had been in a verbal altercation in a tent in the backyard of their home, police said.

During the argument, Lauriston used a screwdriver to stab his girlfriend in the back and neck several times causing serious injuries, officers said.

Lauriston fled; prior to the arrival of the police and his girlfriend as transported to Holmes Regional Medical Center. Her condition is not known at this time, authorities said.

Officers said that Lauriston phoned a friend who convinced Lauriston to turn himself in to police, which he did without incident.
