Workers widen 14-mile stretch of I-95 in Volusia

Thousands of drivers in Volusia County could run into some slowdowns this week as workers widen a nearly 14-mile stretch of Interstate 95.

Work started early Monday morning as crews shut down lanes of Dunlawton Avenue under the highway.

The goal is remove parts of the bridge all together.

The lane closures will be going on for at least the next two nights.

The original plan was to shut down Dunlawton Avenue while the work was going on, which would have meant drivers would be taken on a 10-mile detour to get around the construction for several days.

Ultimately, project managers decided on those lane closures instead.

The widening project is expected to last until 2018.
