School bus crash sends 7 Orlando students to hospital

Bus headed to Lake Gem Elementary School at time of wreck

ORLANDO, Fla. – A school bus and vehicle crashed Tuesday morning in Orlando, sending seven students to the hospital with minor injuries, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Troopers said the bus was headed to Lake Gem Elementary School in Orlando at the time of the crash, which happened around 8 a.m. at Hiawassee Oak Drive and High Lake Drive.

The FHP said the bus, which was carrying about 50 students, was headed west on Hiawassee Oak Drive and moved to the center of the road to avoid parked cars on either side of the road.

A 21-year-old Orlando man driving a Nissan Altima was eastbound and crashed head-on into the bus at a low rate of speed, the FHP said. He told troopers that the glare from the sun prevented him from seeing the bus, according to officials.

Details about the injuries to the seven students, who were taken to Florida Hospital South and Florida Hospital Apopka, were not released. Troopers initially said 15 students went to the hospital.

The crash remains under investigation, and charges are pending, the FHP said.
