School bus ignites minutes after students unloaded, deputies say

No injuries reported in bus fire near Apopka

APOPKA, Fla. – A school bus coming from an Orange County middle school ignited near Apopka on Tuesday afternoon, but officials say no students were injured.

The bus fire was reported at Wekiva Springs Road and Cimarron Ash Way.

Deputies say the school bus driver pulled over after the bus was having some mechanical issues and called another bus to pick up the students, who were from Piedmont Lakes Middle School.

All the students were loaded safely onto the new bus and minutes later, the bus ignited, according to deputies.

Pictures from viewers sent in to News 6 showed the school bus engulfed in flames as smoke billowed from the bus. Witnesses also told News 6 they heard a loud explosion.

No other details were immediately available.
