Temporary traffic light installed at DeLand intersection where 3 killed in crash

Grandma, 3 girls killed in fiery crash

A temporary traffic light was installed on Monday at the DeLand intersection where a crash killed a grandmother and her three grandchildren earlier this month.

The traffic light was installed at Grand Avenue and New York Avenue and is flashing yellow. The light will become fully functional on Wednesday and will stay until the Florida Department of Transportation can build a permanent roundabout.

The Florida Highway Patrol said Aryana Thomas, 2, Jaydyn Thomas, 4 and Aleah Bridges died in the crash.  Troopers said the vehicle was driven by Sandra Lopes, who also died.

According to the FHP, the woman was driving a Jeep Wrangler with three children inside when a Ford SUV driven by a 64-year-old DeLand man traveled into her path.

The vehicles collided, and the Jeep overturned and caught fire, troopers said. All four occupants of the Jeep died at the scene, the FHP said.

The driver of the SUV was not injured.

The family has been pushing for a change at the intersection since the fatal crash.
