Sticker shock: $1,000 charge for candy and a Coke

Corner gas station reluctant to refund money

Mike Rooks may be the victim of one of the  most  expensive candy and soda purchases in recent memory: $1000.

“I said it out loud," Rooks recalled, "I said 'This ain’t right.'

Rooks said he glanced at his receipt and saw a total of $1054.43 for the Coke and two candy bars a Hershey bar and an Almond Joy bar that he had just purchased at the Kwik King Shell station on southbound U.S. Highway 441 in Summerfield.

He immediately brought the overcharge to the attention of a station employee, who told him to call the bank to get the debit card purchase stopped.

No luck.

That was January 18 .

Rooks was told the refund could take up to 40 days but when that time passed, his account still had not been credited.

Rooks said he would have dismissed the whole thing if it was $10, but it was a lot more than that.

Rooks called WKMG-TV News 6 for help and following an email to Shell Oil, the issue was resolved quickly.

Shell Oil spokesperson Natalie Mazey worked with Investigator Mike Holfeld to track down the mistake.

“I called you, and within 24 hours I got a call from the president’s office  of Shell Oil, and they were getting me a check,”  Rooks  said.

In an email to News 6, Mazey wrote:

"Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention and providing us with the opportunity to respond.

"Shell is not involved in the day-to-day operation of the station, and personnel at the Station are neither employed nor controlled by Shell. Nevertheless, Shell does expect that all independent businesses involved with Shell-branded stations, whether wholesalers or independent station owners/operators, will comply with all applicable laws in their operations, to conduct business in a professional manner, to provide the public with courteous service, and to take appropriate action to resolve any customer complaint.

"Since this matter was brought to our attention, we contacted the customer and the Wholesaler for the station location. It is our understanding that the Wholesaler provided a check to Mr. Rooks in the amount of $1,054.46, which he picked up on Monday, 5/9/2016. Additionally, we are providing Mr. Rooks with a $100 Shell Gift Card as a token of our appreciation and hope he agrees to try Shell again in the future for his fueling needs."
