Children in SWAT standoff rescued through window, Orlando police say

Gunman taken into custody after report of shots fired

ORLANDO, Fla. – Two children were rescued through an apartment window during a SWAT standoff Thursday at an Orlando apartment complex, and a man was later taken into custody, police said.

Orlando police said Tremon D. Jones, 23, was arrested after the standoff, which was reported at the Cornerstone Apartments in the 2300 block of South Conway Road.

Police said two children were in the apartment with Jones, who they said was spotted earlier firing shots.

Police said that witnesses called into 911 just after 8 a.m. Investigators said not only did the man shoot in the air, but he also shot at an unoccupied vehicle.

A SWAT team broke one of the apartment windows to pull the two toddlers to safety just after 12:30 p.m. The young children were seen smiling with their mother, just moments after being rescued.

"Very proud of our SWAT team and command staff. Two toddlers safely removed from home w/ gunman; he's in custody," Orlando police tweeted.

No officers were injured in the incident.

Orlando police said that Jones is dating the children's mother and lives at the apartment complex.

News 6 uncovered Jones was arrest in September after a woman witnessed him attempting to break into a car at a nearby apartment complex.

Jones is facing several new charges, including aggravated child abuse.
