Man seen heading into wooded area near railroad track, police say

COCOA, Fla. – The southbound lanes of U.S. 1 between Michigan Avenue and Dixon Boulevard were shut down Thursday evening in Cocoa after a report of shots fired by a bicyclist, police said.

Patrol officers searched for a man in connection to reports of a shooting in the area near the 1500 block of U.S. 1.

Police received two 911 calls just after 8 p.m. Thursday from independent witnesses who reported a man on a bicycle was shooting at vehicles traveling on the highway, Cocoa police said.

The man fled the area. Police said he was seen heading into a wooded area near the railroad track. Patrol officers set up a perimeter and were searching the area.

Police said the man wore a black hat and all black clothing. Witnesses described him as having a "scruffy" face. Police said he was carrying a red backpack.

Patrol officers believe they have recovered the bicycle the man was using. Police said it is believed the man dumped the bicycle as he fled.

No vehicles were hit and no one was injured in the incident, police said.
