Woman shot in back during 'horseplay' in Brevard, police say

24-year-old suffers severe injuries

MELBOURNE, Fla. – A 24-year-old woman suffered severe injuries to her back and kidney area late Sunday during an incident of "horseplay," according to police.

The shooting happened about 9:50 p.m. Sunday In the 400 block of Club Trail, just north of Eber Road.

Police said two men, ages 23 and 33, were with the woman when one of the men began handling a handgun, discharging a round.

“They were horsing around with a firearm. The gun went off, and (the bullet) struck her in the lower back, in the area of the kidney,” Melbourne police Cmdr. Dan Lynch said. “One of the men called 911 for help.”

The woman was rushed to Holmes Regional Medical Center, where she was treated for her injuries.

No charges were filed in the case.

The relationship between the two men and the woman was not immediately known.

An investigation is ongoing.
