Mayor shuts offices due to absenteeism arrests

23 public sector workers under investigation

Reuters reports that the mayor of a small Italian town responded to the arrest of 23 of his staff for absenteeism by shutting most municipal offices down Tuesday.

The arrests come in wake of a weeks-long investigation which showed town hall staff clocking in and then leaving for personal business or swiping multiple cards to cover for absent coworkers.

Mayor of Boscotrecase, Pietro Carotenuto, who was elected only one month ago, said four major town hall departments had to be shut down because they suffered from lack of workers. Those arrested are accused of fraud against the state. They have been suspended from work for six to 12 months, and could also be dismissed entirely.
