DeLand family finds man bleeding on front porch
DeLAND, Fla. – A 26-year-old man was shot to death late Sunday in Volusia County after an argument between two acquaintance escalated into gunfire, according to deputies.
The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office said Akeem Smith was killed in the shooting, which was reported just before 11 p.m. at Holly Boulevard and North Parkway Street near DeLand.
Deputies said a family called 911 after hearing gunshots and finding a man bleeding on the front porch.
The man, later identified as Smith, was taken to Florida Hospital DeLand, where he was pronounced dead, deputies said.
The Sheriff's Office said the shooter, Gary Edmondson, called authorities and said that he shot a man after after the man opened fire on him.
Edmondson did not suffer injuries and is cooperating with the investigation. It's not clear if charges will be filed.
An investigation is continuing, but no other details have been released.
