Man nearly run over trying to stop purse thief

Cops: Thief steals purse from woman at Walmart

PALM COAST, Fla. – Deputies said a woman in her 70s was shopping in the produce section Tuesday morning when another woman came up and stole her purse from the shopping cart.

The victim's husband saw what happened and tried to stop the thief, but she wasn't giving up and almost ran him over with her car, a Chevrolet Cruze.

"The suspect jumped into her car and the husband of the victim apparently reached into the door to unlock the window and lost his balance. He didn't fall and wasn't injured, but he did stumble," said Laura Williams, a spokesperson for the Flagler County Sheriff's Office.

The suspect managed to get away, but not without being caught on camera. A witness recorded part of the altercation in the parking lot, getting a snapshot of the vehicle.

Williams said there is a lesson to be learned here, and that's to keep a close eye on your belongings, especially when you're shopping and to never chase after a suspect, no matter how much you may want to.

"Instead, we recommend that people certainly be a good witness. If you see something like this happen, we really want your information about the suspect, clothing description, anything like that," she said.

Officials are reminding people of precautions to avoid becoming a victim:

  • When shopping, never leave your wallet or purse unattended.
  • Be alert and aware of your surroundings as you shop. Observe who's near you and what they're doing.
  • Be a good witness. Be able to provide an accurate physical description of the criminal: clothing, height, weight, hair and eye color.

Anyone with information about the theft can call the Flagler County Sheriff's Office at 386-313-4911.
