Throwing away mail is a federal crime punishable by jail and fine

FORT MYERS, Fla. – A Florida postal worker was caught throwing mail into a dumpster behind a local restaurant.

WINK-TV reports that surveillance video captured images of the unnamed worker tossing the pieces of mail into the trash.

Among the items tossed into the dumpster were flyers from a realtor and dozens of personal letters.

“At first I thought she was just dumping out some trash. I didn’t think much of it, but when she flipped the bin over, I could clearly see it was mail and letters,” Louie Rondao told WINK-TV.

Special agents are now investigating the incident.

According to the report, throwing away mail is a federal crime.
