'Scary' clown mask prompts school lockdown in Lake County

3 middle-schoolers charged with wearing mask, disruption of school campus

TAVARES, Fla. – Three middle school students were charged after Lake County deputies say they were wearing a scary clown mask at a bus stop near an elementary school, prompting the school to be placed on lockdown.

Deputies said they were called Tuesday to a bus stop in the area of Treadway School Road and Secret Hill Road near Treadway Elementary School by parents who said the students were wearing a scary clown mask and taking pictures.

The students were also trying to download an app with gun sounds to use with the mask, according to deputies.

Deputies said parents notified Treadway Elementary School and the school was placed on a precautionary lockdown.

The students were taken off the bus at Tavares Middle School and were charged with violation of Florida statute 876.20, wearing mask and placing exhibit to intimidate, and Florida statute 877.13, disruption or disturbance which interferes with the educational process or with the orderly conduct of a school campus, according to deputies.

The students were not identified.
