Pedestrian struck, killed by semi on I-95 in Volusia identified

Big rig driver uninjured in fatal crash

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – A 56-year-old Oak Hill man who was attempting to cross Interstate 95 in Daytona Beach on Wednesday evening was hit and killed by a semitruck, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The FHP said Thomas Mayo died in the crash, which was reported at 6:45 p.m. near mile marker 261 in Daytona Beach.

Troopers said Mayo tried to cross the southbound lanes of I-95 when he entered the direct path of the semi. The front of the big rig struck Mayo, who was pronounced dead at the scene, the FHP said.

The 61-year-old truck driver was not hurt. 

The crash remains under investigation.
