A glitch on the social network caused numerous users, including founder Mark Zuckerberg, to have a notice pop up on their profiles labeling them as dead.
"We hope people who love (user) will find comfort in the things others share to remember and celebrate (his or her) life," the message read.
The message seemed to disappear around 4 p.m. Friday, but not before hundreds of people used #RIPMe on Twitter to share screenshots of their accidentally memorialized profiles.
It's unclear at this point how many users were affected. Facebook provided a statement to TechCrunch explaining the glitch.
“For a brief period today, a message meant for memorialized profiles was mistakenly posted to other accounts. This was a terrible error that we have now fixed," the statement read. "We are very sorry that this happened and we worked as quickly as possible to fix it.”
