Cab driver severely beaten in Palm Bay

Police search for man wanted in attack

PALM BAY, Fla. – A Yellow Cab driver is recovering after being severely beaten over the weekend by a fare picked up at a sports bar in Palm Bay, police said.

The taxi driver, whose name has not been released, was expected to recover from the beating as detectives review potential surveillance video from locations near the site of the attack. No arrests have been made, News 6 partner Florida Today reported.

“The taxi cab picked up a fare early Sunday at J.D.’s Sports Lounge and was taking him to a location on U.S. 1,” Palm Bay police Lt. Mike Bandish said. “The person hit the cab driver with a blunt object and took cash.

Bandish said the cabbie was seriously injured.

"He was hit in the head. He is stable, but in the hospital,” he said.

Detectives were searching for potential witnesses who might have seen the man in the minutes before he got into the cab. Detectives were also talking with the taxi driver and working on several leads to identify the possible robber.

Police said the robber in the latest case does not match the description of the man who shot and wounded a cab driver in an April incident at Port Malabar and Babcock Street.

The robber in the unrelated April shooting has not been found.

Anyone with information in the latest case is asked to call Palm Bay police.
