Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood caught speeding

Sheriff tracked at 78 mph in 55 mph zone

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Volusia County's new sheriff is not above the law.

According to the News-Journal, a deputy caught Sheriff Mike Chitwood going 78 mph in a 55 mph zone on LPGA Boulevard on Friday.

Chitwood said the sergeant stopped him and they talked briefly before going their separate ways.

Chitwood, who was in an unmarked car, said he later realized he was in the wrong, called the sergeant and asked him to write the ticket. Chitwood said he has paid the $278 citation.

Chitwood was stopped a day after Volusia County settled a lawsuit for a deputy-related crash. The agency also is doing an internal investigation regarding a Dec. 20 crash involving another deputy who was speeding.
