Deputy accused of taking money from DUI suspects resigns

Resignation effective immediately

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.Update: On Feb. 13, News 6 learned 18 pending cases had been dismissed. Below is the previous report from January.

A Volusia County deputy accused of taking money from motorists arrested on DUI charges resigned on Monday, according to a news release.

Deputy John Braman, 33, was placed on paid administrative leave Wednesday after the accusations surfaced. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the state attorney’s office and the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office are investigating.

Prior to his resignation, Braman had been with the Sheriff's Office road patrol unit since Jan. 1, 2007.

"Integrity is the cornerstone of any law enforcement officer’s career. Once you lose your integrity, you’ve lost your ability to be an effective law enforcement officer," Sheriff Mike Chitwood said.

Braman was shot in the arm in the line of duty in 2011 and was injured in 2013 when he was struck by a car, authorities said.
