DUNNELLON, Fla. – Firefighters and U.S. Forest Service officials are working to extinguish flames after what was supposed to be a controlled fire in the Florida Highlands burned out of control Friday afternoon, according to the Marion County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies said at 4 p.m. that the fire was threatening structures, but then amended their statement 30 minutes later and said that no structures were in the path of the flames.

The fire, near Southwest 155th Street and Southwest 75th Avenue in Dunnellon, covers about 40 acres, officials said.

As of 5 p.m., the fire was 60 percent contained, deputies said.

"Due to some new information received during this investigation, the cause of the fire is still being investigated by the US Forestry Service," deputies said. "There are no structures in immediate danger at this time."
