DeLAND, Fla. – Two teenage boys are accused of breaking into DeLand Middle School early Wednesday morning and stealing hundreds of dollars in cash, according to the DeLand Police Department.
Police responded to the school around 3:50 a.m. when alarms started going off. They were quickly able to locate the two boys, who are both 16 years old, an arrest affidavit said.
Both teens were wearing gloves when they were arrested. Officers said they found money, three cellphones and a black bow tie on one boy. The other boy had a teal bag containing $730.01, a pink backpack, USB chargers and four AA batteries, according to the affidavit.
One boy refused to talk, but the other teen, who was already scheduled to be on probation until his 19th birthday for a prior burglary charge, told police that they jumped a fence and entered the school through the unlocked door to the agriculture room.
He said they grabbed some cash from a desk drawer then broke a small window so they could enter Building 11, police said. Once inside, they went to the band teacher's classroom and stole the teal money bag from an unlocked safe, according to the affidavit.
Both teens are charged with burglary and one is also charged with violation of probation.
