Deputy shoots, kills armed man in Deltona, officials say

Sheriff's Office says man pointed shotgun in direction of deputy

DELTONA, Fla. – A 58-year-old man was shot and killed Thursday night after he pointed a shotgun at a deputy, the Volusia County Sheriff's Office said.

The deputy-involved shooting happened in the 700 block of Teather Avenue in Deltona.

The Sheriff's Office said deputies went to the home after call was placed at 6:38 p.m. from a woman who said the man, later identified as Daniel A. Donarski, 58, was off his usual medications and having a breakdown.

“It’s not good,” the woman told a dispatcher, according to the Sheriff's Office. "He's cussing up a storm and he punched some holes in the wall."

The woman said she didn't believe Donarski was armed, but there were weapons in the house, the Sheriff's Office said.

The Sheriff's Office said Donarski came out of the house and pointed a shotgun in the direction of a deputy, later identified as Shawn Adkins, 25, who fired his weapon, striking and killing the man.

Donarski was pronounced dead at the scene.

Adkins, who was hired in October 2015, was placed on temporary paid leave, which is standard procedure, the Sheriff's Office said.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate.
