DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Police said a 16-year-old who claimed that he was robbed while walking to church in Daytona Beach made the story up.

The teen, who lives in Ormond Beach, told police that he was robbed at gunpoint Sunday evening while walking to St. Paul’s Basilica on North Ridgewood Avenue.

Daytona Beach police said the teen came forward later and confessed that the robbery did not happen and he lost his wallet.

The teen said he made up the story because he was grounded and did not want to face further punishment from his family, according to police.

Police said the teen told investigators that he regrets any bad light his story brought upon the church.
