Man shot during attempted carjacking, police say

No arrests made

SOUTH DAYTONA, Fla. – A man was shot in the leg Saturday night while fighting off a man whom he thought was trying to steal his truck, according to the South Daytona Police Department.

The victim loaded his trash bags into the back of his pickup truck around 10 p.m. to take them to the trash compactor at the back of the Golfview Apartments. When he got out of his truck, he left the door open and the engine running.

The victim was putting the bags into the compactor when he felt someone press against him from behind, the report said. He turned around and the man who grabbed him started to fight with him, telling the victim "Stop" and "Let go," police said.

The victim said he believed the man was trying to steal his truck.

The man shot the victim in the thigh during the struggle, then ran away from the scene, according to the report.

The victim told police the man was young and had a voice that wasn't "manly," officials said.

A perimeter was set up in the area, but the attempted carjacker was not found.
