Boy, 12, drowns at Grand Cypress resort in Orlando, deputies say

Victim's family was visiting from Maryland

ORLANDO, Fla. – A 12-year-old boy drowned Tuesday at the Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress resort in Orlando, deputies said.

The Orange County Sheriff's Office said it was called at 12:42 p.m. about a near drowning at the resort.

Deputies said they boy, identified as DeShawn Smith, had been pulled from the pool by witnesses, who performed CPR on him.

DeShawn was taken to Dr. Phillips Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, deputies said.

DeShawn was a guest at the resort with his family, which is visiting from Maryland, deputies said.

A death investigation is underway, the Sheriff's Office said.
