15-year-old boy dies in crash after fleeing traffic stop, police say

Chrysler Sebring found upside down in boggy marsh

ORMOND BEACH, Fla. – A 15-year-old boy was killed early Wednesday morning in a single-vehicle crash after he fled from a traffic stop, Ormond Beach police said.

A Volusia County deputy attempted to pull over a red Chrysler Sebring on North Nova Road at 2:23 a.m., but the driver made a U-turn when he saw the deputy. The deputy did not pursue the vehicle, according to a news release.

Dispatchers received a call at 2:28 a.m. about a loud crashing noise near West End Street. Officers originally did not find anything in the area, but then found debris and other evidence that indicated that a vehicle had left a road.

A red Chrysler Sebring was found upside down in a boggy marsh and Joseph Jay Wixted, 15, of Holly Hill, was found in the driver's seat, police said. Wixted was identified Thursday afternoon.

The owner of the vehicle did not know it was missing at the time of the crash and subsequently reported it stolen.

The investigation is continuing.
