Driver held under Baker Act after crashing into several cars, police say

3 people in critical condition

PORT ORANGE, Fla. – A driver had to be committed under the Baker Act after speeding, running a red light and crashing into several vehicles, according to the Port Orange Police Department.

The driver was speeding northbound on Nova Road around 7:49 a.m. Monday morning when he or she ran a red light at the intersection and crashed into several vehicles, a news release said.

Police did not release the driver's identity or provide an exact number of vehicles that were involved in the crash.

Three occupants of the first vehicle that was hit were trapped and had to be extracted. They were taken to Halifax Hospital in critical condition.

The driver was taken into custody at the scene and is being held under the Baker Act. Charges are pending.

An investigation into the crash is underway.
