Marion County deputies joke about bear encounter

Deputies compared the incident to a previous 'bare' encounter

OCKLAWAHA, Fla. – The Marion County Sheriff's Office Facebook page had fun with homonyms in its latest Facebook post.

Deputy Remington captured video of a curious little bear wandering up to his cruiser after responding to a call in the Ocklawaha area. The bear stands right at the deputy's door, looking like he wants  to get into the cruiser.

We realize that recently we posted a video of one of our deputies encountering a 'bare' person, but occasionally, they just encounter bears. Deputy Remington met this very curious guy after he responded to a call in the Ocklawaha area. (We do prefer bear encounters by the way).

The department joked that recently it encountered a "bare" person, but this time they are just encountering a bear, hence the homonym.

The "bare person" they were referring to was an incident on June 7, when a Marion County deputy arrested Andrew Humphries, 18, after he found wandering naked on the side of the road, the Sheriff's Office said. When the deputy attempted to arrest Humphries, he began to kick the cruiser, the Sheriff's Office said.

MAN FOUND WALKING DOWN HIGHWAY NAKED, CAUSES EXTENSIVE DAMAGE ...

MAN FOUND WALKING DOWN HIGHWAY NAKED, CAUSES EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO PATROL CAR On Wednesday, June 7, 2017, Marion County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) deputies arrested 18-year old Andrew Humphries (DOB: 06/18/1998) on several Criminal Mischief charges after he ripped a door handle off a vehicle parked at the MCSO South Multi-District Office and caused severe damage to a MCSO patrol vehicle door while he was in custody. Humphries had left the scene of a vehicle accident and was walking down South U.S. Highway 441 naked when deputies made contact with him. At approximately 7:45 p.m. on Wednesday, MCSO deputies responded to the area of SE 81th Street and South U.S. Highway 441 to assist Marion County Fire Rescue with a vehicle accident. While en route, deputies learned that the driver of one of the vehicles fled the scene on foot. Responding Deputy Peterson found the subject, later identified as Humphries, in the 8900 block of South Highway 441 walking down the road completely nude. Concerned for Humphries’ well-being, Deputy Peterson exited his vehicle and made contact with him. Humphries then walked to the front of Deputy Peterson’s patrol vehicle and tried to open the driver’s door, which was locked. Due to his erratic behavior, Humphries was placed in handcuffs and secured in the back of Deputy Peterson’s patrol vehicle. Humphries then began kicking the rear passenger door of the patrol car and pulling on the metal cage, causing $1,000.00 in damage. Deputies believe the entire door will most likely need to be replaced. Humphries was placed under arrest and transported to the Marion County Jail. While leaving the Marion County Jail, Deputy Peterson received a phone call from the Florida Highway Patrol, saying that while they were investigating the crash Humphries was involved in, they spoke to witnesses who said that when Humphries left the scene, he walked up to a vehicle parked at the MCSO South Multi-District Office. Humphries attempted to open the door to the car and he pulled the door handle off the vehicle. Witnesses added that when he couldn’t get into the car, Humphries then urinated on the vehicle. That vehicle belongs to a MCSO deputy, who estimates the damage to his car is valued at approximately $700.00. Humphries is being charged with one count of felony Criminal Mischief- Property Damage of $1,000.00 or More and one misdemeanor count of Criminal Mischief. The Florida Highway Patrol is conducting a separate investigation into the vehicle crash Humphries was originally involved in.

Which encounter did deputies prefer? According to their Facebook post, they'd take a bear over a bare person any day.
