Man shot, killed in altercation at Marion County home, deputies say

MARION COUNTY, Fla. – Detectives are investigating a shooting death in Marion County Friday that started as a physical fight, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office said.

Deputies responded to a shooting at 1:30 a.m. at a home on Gainesville Road in Reddick. William Markham, 48, was fatally shot and Harrell Jeffries, 56, badly beaten, was deputies said.

The preliminary investigation led detectives to believe that the two men were involved in a physical fight that led to the shooting, deputies said.

Both men were taken to UF Health Shands hospital in Gainesville. Markham died at the hospital and Jeffries is in stable condition.

No arrests have been made and the MCSO Major Crimes Unit is still investigating the case, the Sheriff’s Office Said.
