FHP: Man hits, kills 2 while fleeing from Marion County deputies

Driver slams into 2 vehicles after running red light, troopers say

MARION COUNTY, Fla. – Two people were killed Friday night when a man fleeing from deputies drove through an intersection and slammed into their SUV in Marion County, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Troopers said Jaquard Cuyler, 26, of Wildwood, was speeding in a Volkswagen Jetta west on Southeast 132 Street Road while fleeing from Marion County deputies.

While speeding to get away from the deputies, Cuyler ran a red light and drove into the intersection of U.S. 301 and Southeast 132 Street Road, hitting the SUV, troopers said.

The front of Cuyler's Jetta hit the right side of the SUV, causing the northbound SUV to leave the road and land in a grassy shoulder, the Highway Patrol said.

After hitting the SUV, Cuyler hit another car that had stopped at the intersection while driving south on U.S. 301 before the Jetta left the road and also ended up in the grassy shoulder, troopers said.

Cuyler was taken to Ocala Regional Medical with critical injuries, the FHP said. He later died, according to the Ocala Star Banner.

The driver of the SUV, Brittany Chmilarski, 29, of Ocala, and her passenger, Denise Allen, 57, of The Villages, were pronounced dead at the scene, troopers said.

Troopers said the occupants of the third vehicle were not injured.

The intersection was closed for nearly eight hours following the crash, the Highway Patrol said.

"Two innocent lives were taken," said Lori Wooten, a friend of the victims.

"She always thought about others instead of herself. She was an angel," said another friend, who didn't want to give her name. "No one can take her place."

Troopers said the crash remains under investigation.
