Former police officer faces charges in valet attendant attack

John Kiernan faces charge of misdemeanor battery

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. – Charges have been filed against a former police officer caught on camera allegedly punching a valet attendant in South Florida.

Documents filed in Broward County show John Kiernan, 37, will be charged with misdemeanor battery.

KIernan, who lives in New Smyrna Beach, was caught on surveillance camera outside a Fort Lauderdale hospital last week.

Management at the Ocean Sky Resort said the incident occurred over an $18 parking ticket.

Investigators said Kiernan told them he was afraid the valet had a weapon.  The valet did not have a weapon on him, officials said.
