FHP: Pedestrian, 33, killed while walking on I-75 in Sumter County

Driver stopped after crash, troopers say

SUMTER COUNTY, Fla. – A pedestrian was killed in an overnight crash on Interstate 75 in Sumter County, Florida Highway Patrol troopers said.

Troopers said Daniel Birner, 33, of North Carolina, was walking in the outside right lane on I-75 North near County Road 48 at 12:17 a.m. when the driver of a northbound Toyota Camry hit him.

After being hit, Birner ended up on the outside shoulder, where he died of his injuries, troopers said.

The driver of the Camry, who was not injured, stopped after the crash, the Highway Patrol said.

Troopers said it was unknown why Birner was walking in the roadway.
