Volusia deputy dismissed amid internal affairs investigation into June shooting, officials say

Deputy Kenneth Long dismissed after violation of policy, procedure

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla.A Volusia County deputy has been dismissed after an incident in June.

Sheriff Mike Chitwood said Deputy Kenneth Long, who was a recent hire and still in his probation period at the time, was responding to a report of trespassers on East Kicklighter Road near Lake Helen when he said someone on a four-wheeler fired a weapon at him.

Chitwood said Long returned fire, shooting more than six rounds that potentially put innocent people in danger.

Chitwood said Long's dismissal comes after what the office is calling a violation of policy and procedure.

The Sheriff's Office said the internal affairs investigation into the incident is not yet complete.

No other details were immediately released.
