Brevard County groups providing assistance to Puerto Rico

Organizers say more groups joining every day

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – A number of groups in Brevard County are providing disaster relief assistance to Puerto Rico.

Organizers said community groups that are involved in the local relief effort include INIT Brevard (Puerto Rican Action Initiative), CASA-Orlando (Coordinating Action, Solidarity and Support), Speak Out Brevard, Brevard Democrats, Planned Parenthood and the National Organization for Women.

More groups are joining every day, organizers said.

Generators are a key need. Organizers said for clinics and nursing homes, it may be months before power is restored. A tractor-trailer and driver are needed to haul donated goods to Orlando.

Some of the other hurricane relief materials needed include:

  • Women's pajamas/night gowns (for shelters use)
  • Men's pajamas
  • Blanket
  • Towels
  • Personal: soap, deodorants, toothbrush, toothpaste
  • Baby wipes
  • Adult diapers (L-XL)
  • Kids diapers (all sizes)
  • Medication - all basic
  • First-aid kits
  • Drinking water
  • Personal hygiene
  • Feminine products
  • Construction materials to fix houses
  • Sleeping bags and cots
  • Canopies and tarps
  • Bed sheets and pillowcases
  • Pet food
  • Baby formula
  • Pots, pans, silverware
  • Insect repellent
  • Cardboard moving/packing boxes

Organizers said to please donate new products.

  • Cocoa Beach:
    -Coconuts on the Beach: Monday-Sunday, 11 a.m. to 12 midnight, 2 Minuteman Causeway, Cocoa Beach
  • Palm Bay:
    -Brevard Hispanic Center, 4670 Babcock St. NE #5, Palm Bay
  • Melbourne:
    -Latin Flavor Restaurant: Monday-Sundays, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., 1565 Sarno Road, Melbourne (behind DMV, Sheriff's Office)
    -Brevard DEMS Offices: Monday-Friday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Saturday-Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., 513C Harbor City Blvd., Melbourne (south of Sarno Road).
  • Viera: Lexus of Melbourne, 6927 Bromley Drive, Viera
