Man tries to smuggle snakes inside socks over Canadian border

Chinese citizen facing up to five years in prison

A man has pleaded guilty to trying to sneak snakes into Canada from New York in his socks, reports The Associated Press.

Chaoyi Le, 28, was trying to cross the border into Canada when border agents found three albino western hognose snakes in his socks. He told police he found them, but later admitted to having bought them.

Le, a Chinese citizen who resides in Ontario, said he was trying to avoid a U.S. Fish and wildlife inspection. He also mailed snakes from New York to China that same day.

Le is facing up to five years in prison for violating wildlife regulations.
