Donated urn at Salvation Army discovered to contain ashes

Store to hold onto ashes for relative to claim

A New Jersey Salvation Army is "holding onto" a donated urn containing a man's ashes so they can return it to the family.

According to The Associated Press, the bronze urn that was donated last week is engraved "Richard L. Pettengill 1929-1981."

Although Portsmouth police Lt. Michael Maloney says the donation of the urn is "odd," it's not illegal and the owner can do with the remains what they please.

The store says it will hold the ashes in an effort to return it to relatives.
