85K sign up for hurricane food assistance in Orange County, officials say

DCF tells News 6 that 20,000 people signed up for assistance Wednesday

ORLANDO, Fla. – Hours after the lines closed at Camping World Stadium on Wednesday evening, thousands of people continued to make their way through to apply for food assistance in wake of Hurricane Irma.

Wednesday was the last day to sign up for food assistance vouchers through the Food for Florida program after September's storm.

Natashia Charles said she came back Wednesday after the lines closed early on Sunday.

"I showed up at about 2. It took me until 5 o'clock to get in here," Charles said. "Overall, the line kept moving and I have my chair, so it wasn't too bad."

The Florida Department of Children and Families told News 6 that 20,000 people signed up for the assistance on Wednesday. Their five-day total from Camping World Stadium totaled 85,000 people.

The state said that on average, a single adult who qualifies would receive about $200 a month for two months. A family of four could expect about $1,000 a month for two months.

"Everyone is going through the same emotions. You know, Thanksgiving and Christmas is just around the corner, and you know people haven't received what they need to get their household back in order," Charles said.

Starting on Oct. 31 through Nov. 2, people can show up to the Florida Horse Park in Ocala from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. to sign up for the food assistance. The park is located at 11008 South Hwy 475 in Ocala.

"Preregister if you haven't already, and you can do that at the Food for Florida website. And just be prepared to possibly wait for several hours depending on the volume," said William D'Aiuto, with DCF.

In order to qualify, applicants must meet income requirements and can't currently be receiving food assistance through the state.
