Pedestrian killed in Orange County hit-and-run, FHP says

Troopers say driver fled in white vehicle

ORLANDO, Fla. – One person was killed Monday evening in an Orange County hit-and-run crash, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Troopers said the crash took place around 6:55 p.m. as the man was crossing Apopka Vineland Road from east to west at Lake Street using a marked crosswalk.

Witnesses told troopers that a white vehicle fatally hit the man, who was not immediately identified, and left the scene, the Highway Patrol said.

"I heard a car honk for about a minute... and then a bang," Brittanii Levangie, who lives across the street from where the person was hit, said.

The incident happened in front of a busy shopping plaza not far from Disney Springs.

"I can’t believe somebody hit somebody and ran like that. That’s terrible," she said.

"We’re asking our neighbors, 'Hey, where’s your kid?' We’ve been calling," neighbor Michele Garbalosa said.

Garbalosa said she has been trying to get Orange County leaders to approve a stop light at the crosswalk for three years but hasn't been successful.

"We have a lot of children. We have elementary school, middle school and high school kids here. They’re always crossing the street because there is a Winn-Dixie, there’s a plaza, there’s an ice cream shop, Papa John’s," she said.

Anyone with information about the vehicle is asked to call the FHP at 407-737-2213.
