Brevard couple hears gunfire, finds dogs shot near home

Sheriff's Office offers $1,000 reward for gunman

GRANT, Fla. – Brevard County sheriff's investigators need help identifying a person who shot a family's two dogs.

Jesus Magana told News 6 he had just lost sight of his dogs last Friday while they were walking.

"As I was looking for them and calling for them I heard three gunshots," he said.

He and his wife said they found both of the dogs shot a short distance away from their home.

"He just kind of -- soon as I walked to him -- flopped down in my arms and was completely exhausted," said Star Magana, who said she found her dog Hops in a ravine.

X-rays showed Hops had been shot in the face and the bullet was still lodged in his head.

The other dog, Blue, had been shot in his back leg.

"I still cannot forget the vet telling me that my animal was shot," Star said. "I’m like, 'What?'"

They said the wounds are slowly healing, and the dogs are playing like nothing happened.

But they said it isn't the first time something like this has happened. They told News 6 their cat was shot in February and lost one of his front legs as a result.

Now, they said they not only want the person who's shooting their animals to stop, they want the person arrested.

"Why would you do this to not only a defenseless, harmless animal, but people that are your neighbors and your community?" Star said.

The Sheriff's Office posted an alert about the shooting on its Facebook page Thursday night. The agency is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the gunman.

"Please help us identify who shot these two beautiful dogs, so I can personally walk them to the Brevard County Jail," the post, signed by Sheriff Wayne Ivey, read.

Anyone with information that can help investigators can call Crime Line at 800-423-TIPS.
