ORLANDO, Fla. – It was a sight to see at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children: Red, white and blue lights brightened up the entrance, bringing smiles to some very special children.
Patrol cars from the Orlando Police Department lit up as well, one after another after another.
The lights shone all the way up to the bedrooms of the children receiving treatment at the hospital.
"I think it means a lot for the officers, and (it) obviously means a lot to the kids and parents," police Chief John Mina said.
For the second year, Orlando police joined forces with local children's hospitals to create what they call a "night light salute."
"Being in the hospital can be boring," Mina said. "It's fun for us, it's fun for them (and) it's a good time."
As the emergency lights of the patrol cars went on, children inside their hospital rooms returned the signal by flashing their room lights on and off.
News 6 was able to follow officers inside the hospital to meet the children as police passed out badge stickers and hats.
Mina said he looks forward to continuing this tradition at several Central Florida hospitals in the years to come.
"Seeing police officers visit them in the hospital -- that doesn't happen every day," Mina said.
