Teen found shot, critically injured at Deltona home, deputies say

Details about shooting remain mystery

DELTONA, Fla. – An 18-year-old was shot and critically wounded Thanksgiving night in Volusia County, but details surrounding the shooting remain a mystery, according to deputies.

Tyrese Talbert was injured in the shooting, which was reported at a home on West Akron Avenue in Deltona, the Volusia County Sheriff's Office said.

Sheriff's officials said deputies found Talbert on the floor of his bedroom suffering from a single gunshot wound that went through his right bicep and into his upper-right chest, just under his armpit.

Talbert was taken to Central Florida Regional Hospital in Sanford in critical condition, deputies said.

Officials said Talbert's sister initially reported that he had been shot by an unknown person, but later said it was an accidental shooting.

Talbert's 18-year-old brother told authorities that he was walking with his brother on Akron Drive when they heard a gunshot and ran back home, according to authorities.

Deputies said Talbert's brother could not give an accurate location of where they were when they heard the gunshot.

"It is strongly suspected that (the brother) accidentally shot Talbert while handling a firearm, however, (the brother) adamantly insisted this was not the case," the Sheriff's Office said in a statement.

A search of the home did not find any firearms, although live 9mm ammunition and a .45-caliber casing were found in Talbert's bedroom, deputies said.

No other details have been released.
