OCALA, Fla. – A man is dead after a vehicle fleeing from deputies hit another vehicle in Ocala Sunday morning, the Marion County Sheriff's Office said.

Authorities said the crash took place Sunday at 6:02 a.m. at the intersection of 66th Street and State Road 200 after deputies spotted the vehicle, a Chrysler Sebring, believed to be connected to an active theft case.

Deputies said they tried to pull over the vehicle, driven by Altione Walker, 26, but when he fled, deputies did not continue to pursue the vehicle.

While fleeing, Walker ran a red light and slammed into the vehicle Curtis Brewer, 62, was driving while he tried to turn left onto S.R. 200, according to the crash report.

After the initial crash, the Sebring crossed the westbound lanes of traffic and landed in a ditch, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

A passenger inside the Sebring was taken to Ocala Regional Medical Center, where he later died, troopers said. That man was later identified as Vaughn Monson, 22.

The other occupants of the vehicle were taken to ORMC for minor injuries, according to the report.

Brewer was taken to West Marion Hospital for minor injuries, the FHP said.

The Highway Patrol said the road was shut down after the crash while troopers investigated.

Deputies said theft is also still under investigation.
