Man destroys furniture with ax after leaving toddler in vehicle, police say

Suspect charged with child neglect

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. – A Volusia County father is accused of leaving his toddler in a running vehicle, then using an ax to destroy furniture when he was confronted with what he had done, according to the New Smyrna Beach Police Department.

Authorities were called to a residence on 10th Avenue Saturday night in reference to a domestic disturbance.

Family members said that Jonathan Adams, 35, had been arguing with his mother all day, then, that night, they heard his son yelling for his dad and found the boy sitting in Adams' vehicle, according to the report.

Police said that the vehicle was running and the door was open.

Adams' family got him out of bed and told him that he had left the boy in the vehicle for approximately 15 minutes, the report said. Adams was remorseful at first, then became angry and began using an ax to destroy furniture, according to authorities.

Police arrested Adams on a child neglect charge.
