ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – Police say a man filmed females as they were changing in the fitting rooms at Forever 21 in the Altamonte Mall.
Officers from the Altamonte Springs Police Department responded to the clothing store Friday around 5:15 p.m. in reference to a suspicious person.
"We have a gentleman that's in the fitting room that's recording young ladies trying on stuff," a store employee told a 911 operator.
Security staff at the mall followed the man, identified as 40-year-old Jose Santiago, until officers arrived, according to the caller. Police said Santiago was attempting to delete evidence from his phone as they were talking to him.
Detective Anthony Van Cleave said Santiago positioned his phone in a way that he could record the stall next to his fitting room.
"It appears that he did chose certain stores that would have unisex dressing rooms and using that as a way to get in there and get photos that he was seeking," Van Cleave said,
Santiago's cellphone and Apple Watch were taken into evidence and he was charged with video voyeurism and tampering with evidence. He's being held at the Seminole County Jail on a $7,000 bond.
"It's terrible. Here we are approaching the holidays and in the midst of the shopping season whenever everyone is out paying less attention, trying to hurry in an out of stores, and we've got someone like that that is just preying on those individuals," Van Cleave said.
Police said they are attempting to identify the victims in this case. Anyone with information about the crime is asked to call the Altamonte Springs Police Department at 407-339-2441 or Crimeline at 800-423-TIPS (8477).
