ROCKLEDGE, Fla – Rockledge police are questioning a suspected "package pirate" Wednesday afternoon in connection with the possible thefts of at least one delivery package from nearby homes.

“We’re looking into it,” Donna Seyferth, spokeswoman for the Rockledge Police Department, told News 6 partner Florida Today. “We have one person in custody.”

Patrol officers also searched for a silver pickup truck spotted carrying numerous boxes. The truck was seen fleeing the Levitt Park area but was later recovered, without any packages or boxes.

The incident was reported before noon Wednesday.

Authorities say package thefts just before Christmas are becoming a trend nationwide.  Police warn that some thieves canvas neighborhoods to find delivery packages to steal. “It can be challenging,” Seyferth said.

“If you have a package being delivered, find a neighbor to keep an eye out for it.”

Authorities are asking the public to report any suspicious behavior to 321-690-3988.

Preventing package theft :

  • Have packages delivered to a neighbor.
  • Be home to sign for packages when they come.
  • Pick up deliveries directly from the post office.
