Bystanders detain suspect after shooting near UCF, deputies say

Victim suffers non-life-threatening injuries; suspect in custody

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – A person was shot Tuesday night during an attempted robbery near the University of Central Florida, but the suspected shooter was detained by witnesses, deputies said.

The shooting was reported near Shamrock Liquors at 12046 Collegiate Way, according to officials from the Orange County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies said two men were inside a truck parked near Marley's Tobacco when Leonard Hill, 24, got into the back seat of the truck, pointed a gun at the men and demanded their money.

The victim in the driver's seat punched Hill, then walked out of the truck, around to the back and pulled Hill from the vehicle, at which point the two men began fighting, according to an affidavit.

The report said that the victim in the passenger's seat also got out and began punching Hill in an attempt to subdue him.

During the struggle, Hill's gun went off and one of the victims was shot in the leg, authorities said. Hill was repeatedly shouting, "I am going to kill you," as the men fought, according to the affidavit.

Hill eventually broke free from the headlock he had been placed in and tried to get away, but bystanders stepped in to help subdue him once again until authorities arrived, the report said.

Deputies said the victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Hill was arrested at the scene and the gun used in the shooting was recovered, according to the affidavit. The Glock 43 had been reported stolen out of Christmas in 2016.
