Brevard deputies shoot man trying to harm himself, officials say

Authorities say man had a sharp, cutting object

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – A man is in critical condition after a deputy-involved shooting in southern Brevard County.

The shooting took place Thursday afternoon on Honey Lane in Grant-Valkaria.

"Shortly after 4 o'clock this afternoon, we received a 911 call that a person was trying to commit suicide," said Tod Goodyear, with Brevard County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies said the call came in from a concerned family member. Two deputies were sent to check out a home on Honey Lane.

Deputies arrived to a man with a sharp, cutting object. They said the man was trying to harm himself and they were forced to fire.

"A Taser was deployed at one point," Goodyear said. "It was ineffective, and then shortly thereafter, the deputies were forced to use deadly force."

Video from Sky 6 shows the rural area in front of the home, where officials said the shooting happened.

The man is in critical condition.

"Our homicide team is out there doing their investigation at the moment," Goodyear said. "They're interviewing some people in the area to see what they saw and what they heard."

Deputies said they would be out there overnight securing the scene, gathering more information in the morning when they have more light.

The two deputies involved have been put on administrative leave.
