Woman arrested after hourslong standoff with Titusville police

Neighbors say woman pointed gun at them

TITUSVILLE, Fla. – A woman was taken into custody Wednesday after an hourslong standoff with Titusville police, according to department officials.

Police said they were called to the River Breeze Apartments near Court Street and U.S. Highway 1 around 3 p.m. Wednesday after several people called 911 to report that Sherrie Copeland, 55, who lives there pointed a gun at them.

When officers arrived at the complex, Copeland went inside her apartment with the gun, police said.

Authorities said negotiators worked to get the woman to surrender in a peaceful manner. At 5:30 p.m., SWAT team members deployed tear gas in the apartment and Copeland was taken into custody, unharmed.

Residents of the building who were evacuated during the standoff were allowed back into their homes, police said. Court Street was closed at U.S. Highway 1 and later reopened, according to police.

Copeland was arrested on a warrant for five counts of aggravated assault, police said.

No other details were immediately available.
