Man fatally shot 20-year-old girlfriend in Ocala street, police say

Police arrested Yusuf Melendez in fatal domestic violence shooting

OCALA, Fla. – A 20-year-old woman was shot to death Wednesday night in Ocala by a man she was in a relationship with, police said.

Ocala police said the shooting was reported around 10:30 p.m. in the 3400 block of Southeast Fourth Street.

Police said neighbors heard up to three gunshots. The unidentified victim, later identified as Katherine Sarahi Ovalle, was found on the ground near a vehicle abandoned in the middle of the road. She was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Witnesses led detectives to Yusuf Melendez, 21. When police found him, he was sweating and out of breath and officers said they saw blood on his shoes and pants. Melendez told police he was walking from his house on 4th Street to his cousin's when he heard gunshots and ran away. He said the blood was from a cut on his hand more than a week ago and he hadn't changed his clothes in days, Ocala police said.

Witnesses identified Melendez as the man they saw in the area at the time of the shooting.

Police said the suspect and Ovalle were in a relationship for an undetermined length of time.

Melendez was arrested and charged with second-degree murder. He is being held without bail in the Marion County Jail.
